Seven Chicks of Peacock Successfully Bred and Hatched at ACCB in 2025
AKP Phnom Penh, November 09, 2025 --
This year, the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB) has successfully bred and hatched seven chicks of peacock (or Green Peafowl).
According to the ACCB, the bird, listed as Endangered according to the IUCN Red List, has been successfully bred for many years at the centre as part of its assurance population programme to ensure they do not go extinct.
The global population is estimated at approximately 15,000 to 29,999 individuals, of which about 10,000 to 19,999 are mature individuals.
Regarding the habitat and ecology of this bird species, they live in almost all types of forests, ranging from primary and secondary, including evergreen, semi-evergreen forests, bamboo forests, deciduous forests, grasslands, mixed coniferous forests, and swamp forests. Additionally, they particularly prefer living in deciduous forests and agricultural fields. Their diet is omnivorous.
In Cambodia, according to researchers, there are more than 1,000 of these beautiful birds.
