Samdech Khuon Sudary Highlights Cambodia-Hungary Friendship and Cambodia-Thailand Peace during Luncheon in Budapest
AKP Phnom Penh, October 28, 2025 --
“The current visit to Hungary was not only a journey to a long-standing friend’s country but also coincided with a moment of great joy for the Cambodian people, who are celebrating the recent Cambodia–Thailand peace agreement,” said Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, on Sunday during a luncheon hosted by Hon. István Jakab, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary, as part of her official and friendly visit to Hungary.
Samdech expressed heartfelt appreciation for the warm welcome and hospitality, emphasising that the visit represented a meaningful opportunity to strengthen the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and Hungary — a country that has stood by Cambodia in all circumstances.
She informed her counterpart that the Cambodian people were filled with joy and pride over the peace agreement recently signed under the leadership of Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and H.E. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister of Thailand, witnessed by U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, following a border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand that began on July 24, 2025.
Samdech Khuon Sudary stressed that “this peace agreement holds profound significance — not only for the peoples of Cambodia and Thailand but also for regional and global peace and stability.”
During the luncheon, the parliamentary leaders of both countries underlined the long-standing and excellent relations between Cambodia and Hungary, built on mutual trust, respect, and shared aspirations. They added that the visit aimed to further strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly in people-centered development, as both nations prepare to celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026.
Hon. István Jakab underscored the importance of Cambodia to Hungary’s engagement in Southeast Asia. Cambodia is a true, reliable friend of Hungary. He also highlighted Hungary’s strengths in agriculture and water resource management, reaffirming Hungary’s commitment to enhancing agricultural cooperation with Cambodia. He also noted that many Cambodian students are currently pursuing studies in various fields in Hungary including agriculture and food industry.
Both parliamentary leaders also committed to further strengthening and deepening bilateral cooperation in science, technology, innovation, trade, investment, culture, tourism, and education, aiming to deliver tangible benefits to the peoples of both countries.
Samdech Khuon Sudary proposed that Hungary consider offering additional scholarships for Cambodian students to pursue higher education and research in Hungary, emphasising that human capital development is essential to Cambodia’s national progress.
She further shared that the Cambodian National Assembly is working to establish a Parliamentary Research and Training Service Unit to support the leadership and members of the National Assembly through evidence-based and rigorous research on legislative, national, and international policy issues, as well as to strengthen the professional development of the Secretariat-General officials.
Reflecting on her personal connection with Hungary, Samdech highlighted the achievements of Cambodian alumni who studied in Hungary during the 1980s — many of whom now hold key positions in the Royal Government. Samdech underscored that their success stands as a testament to Hungary’s valuable contribution to Cambodia’s human resource cultivation and leadership development.
