Korea Commends Cambodia for Effective Cooperation in Combating Cross-Border Crimes
AKP Phnom Penh, October 16, 2025 --
Senior Minister H.E. Santepundit Chhay Sinarith, Chairman of the Secretariat of the Committee for Combating Online Scams (CCOS), received here this morning H.E. Ms. Kim Jina, Second Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, during her working visit to Cambodia.
At the meeting, H.E. Santepundit Chhay Sinarith highly valued the close cooperation between Cambodia and the Republic of Korea in various fields, including politics, trade, economy, development cooperation, people-to-people exchanges, and security. He reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia’s strong commitment and continued efforts to prevent, combat, and dismantle online fraud operations.
He noted that during the past four months of 2025, Cambodian authorities have referred a total of 75 suspected ringleaders and accomplices to court and arrested more than 3,400 suspects in connection with online scams, which, he underlined, is a global and complex challenge that requires mutual confidence and cooperation among countries, as well as public education on the risks, forms, and deceptive tactics employed by criminal groups.
“Trust and good cooperation with partners are essential to ensure that criminal networks do not re-emerge or relocate from one area to another,” he emphasised.
For her part, H.E. Ms. Kim Jina praised the effective cooperation between Cambodian and Korean authorities, particularly in combating cross-border crimes such as online scams, but has not received sufficient media attention. She also thanked the Cambodian side for facilitating her delegation’s field inspection and preparations for the repatriation of Korean nationals to their home country.
Both sides also discussed future directions for cooperation, including information sharing, coordination on the repatriation of Korean citizens, and other practical areas of collaboration.
On the same day, the Korean delegation visited an online scam site in Troyeng Kpuos village, Lumpong commune, Bati district, Takeo province.
To date, Cambodian authorities have arrested and deported 180 Korean nationals involved in online scams, while more than 60 others are currently awaiting deportation to the Republic of Korea in the near future.
