Samdech Khuon Sudary Thanks European Parliament for Support on Cambodia–Thailand Ceasefire
AKP Kandal, September 21, 2025-- Samdech Maha Rathasapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, on Saturday met with H.E. Wouter Beke, Head of the European Parliament Delegation and Member of the European Parliament, on the sidelines of the 46th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Kuala Lumpur.
Samdech Khuon Sudary expressed deep gratitude to the European Parliament for its consistent support, particularly for issuing statements calling for the Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire and for closely monitoring its implementation since the agreement took effect on July 28, 2025.
H.E. Wouter Beke expressed interest in the latest developments in the Cambodia–Thailand conflict, noting that the European Union has been following the situation closely and hopes for a full restoration of peace and normalcy between the two neighbors.
Samdech Khuon Sudary also provided a historical overview of the dispute, explaining that the core issue stems from conflicting maps. Cambodia recognises the 1904–1907 French–Siamese maps deposited with the United Nations and internationally acknowledged, while Thailand has relied on a unilateral map, which she said remains the root cause of the conflict.
She recalled that Cambodia had previously taken the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which issued a ruling in 1962, and again submitted disputes in 2008 and 2011, resulting in another ICJ ruling in 2013.
The Cambodian NA President also thanked the European Union for its humanitarian concern for displaced persons affected by the clashes. While acknowledging existing international humanitarian assistance, she appealed for further support to help displaced families rebuild their lives, particularly in addressing pressing health challenges.
The European Parliament delegation reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to continue monitoring the situation closely and to encourage effective implementation of the ceasefire, with the aim of ensuring lasting peace and stability between Cambodia and Thailand.
