AKP Phnom Penh, September 20, 2025 —
Samdech Maha Rathasapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, on Saturday met with H.E. Javier Ignacio Maroto Aranzábal, Deputy Speaker of the Senate of Spain, on the sidelines of the 46th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Kuala Lumpur.
During the meeting, Samdech Khuon Sudary expressed appreciation to Spain for its continued support to Cambodia in social and economic development, as well as in promoting peace, democracy, and good governance. She highlighted the steady growth of Cambodia–Spain relations, noting progress in bilateral trade and Spain’s role as an important market for Cambodian rice exports to the European Union.
Samdech Khuon Sudary welcomed Spain’s aspiration to become a parliamentary observer of AIPA, stressing that such participation would further strengthen ties between Spain, AIPA, and ASEAN. She emphasised that Spain, as a vital member of the European Union, can contribute significantly to advancing ASEAN–EU cooperation, which is essential to promoting peace, stability, and good governance globally.
Addressing regional issues, Samdech Khuon Sudary recalled the root causes of the Cambodia–Thailand border conflict. She emphasized that while bilateral mechanisms remain important for resolving disputes, if such mechanisms fail to produce a solution, recourse should be made to the International Court of Justice for adjudication.
“Cambodia loves peace, is committed to resolving disputes by peaceful means, and upholds the ASEAN Charter, the Charter of the United Nations, and international law,” she stressed.
In response, H.E. Javier Ignacio Maroto Aranzábal assured that he would convey the concerns and insights to the President of the Spanish Senate. He reaffirmed that Spain would continue to closely monitor developments and do its utmost to support peace and stability between the two neighbouring nations.
