Acting Head of State: Techo International Airport, Cambodia's New Gateway to the World
AKP Phnom Penh, September 09, 2025 --
Cambodian Acting Head of State Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has applauded today’s launch of Techo International Airport (TIA), describing it as Cambodia’s new gateway to the world.
In a message posted on his social media platforms this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen highlighted TIA as a major milestone for Cambodia’s aviation sector and national economy.
He underlined the aviation sector’s vital role as a driver of connectivity for tourists, businesses, political networks, and multi-purpose missions, as well as a key source of national revenue guided by targeted policies to attract investment, strengthen diplomatic relations, and promote diverse destinations.
“Therefore, Cambodia has actively expanded and upgraded its international airports to meet growing travel demand and enhance connectivity for travellers, especially those visiting Cambodia,” he stated.
Located about 20 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, the US$1.5 billion TIA covers more than 2,600 hectares of land across Prek Sleng commune in Kandal Stung district, Kandal province, and part of Bati district in Takeo province.
As a large-scale 4F-class facility, TIA is capable of accommodating all major aircraft, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747. In its first phase, the airport can serve up to 13 million passengers annually and handle 26,000 tonnes of cargo.
The official inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 20, 2025, under the high presidency of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet.
Air Cambodia’s inaugural flight carrying Chinese tourists was the first to land at TIA, while Korean Air operated the final departure from Phnom Penh International Airport (Pochentong) before the transfer of operations.
