Nobel Laureate in Physics Shares Insights on “Materials for the Future” with Cambodian Scientists, Students
AKP Phnom Penh, September 08, 2025 --
Professor Konstantin Novoselov, recipient of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics, visited Cambodia to share his insights on “Materials for the Future” at the Royal University of Phnom Penh.
The event was held on Sept. 8 under the patronage of H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation and Chairman of the National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation.
According to the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, Professor Konstantin Novoselov is lauded for his pivotal role in unveiling graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms that has sparked a revolution in materials science. His groundbreaking work unlocked extraordinary properties—exceptional strength, flexibility, and electrical conductivity—that hold promise for next-generation electronics, sensors, energy storage, and flexible displays.
Speaking at this high-level lecture, Minister Vanndy said the professor Konstantin Novoselov’s presence is an honour for Cambodia and supports the country’s efforts to strengthen its science and technology sector.
“The topic of ‘Materials for the Future’ aligns with Cambodia’s national research agenda and the broader ecosystem of science, technology, and innovation,” he noted. “The challenge before us is not only to pursue scientific discovery, but also to translate knowledge into tangible benefits for socio-economic development and national progress.”
As Cambodia diversifies its economy and advances industrialisation, the Minister emphasised the critical role of STEM education, research and development (R&D), quality higher education, and technology transfer programmes in building human capital for a competitive economy in the technology era.
H.E. Dr. Som Ratana, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, echoed this vision, highlighting that the knowledge gained today is not only for personal growth but also for pioneering education in science, technology, and innovation for future generations. He stressed that in a rapidly changing world, the government places high priority on technology and innovation as drivers of development.
Nobel Laureate in Physics Novoselov currently teaches and conducts research at the National University of Singapore.
