Temporary Opening of Cambodia-China Mekong Friendship Bridge Eases Travel for Pchum Ben Festival
AKP Phnom Penh, September 08, 2025 —
The Cambodia-China Mekong Friendship Bridge in Kratie province has been temporarily opened to the public for the Kan Ben and Pchum Ben festivals, a move aimed at easing travel for celebrants.
The temporary access period began on Sept. 8 and will run until Sept. 28, 2025.
The opening ceremony was presided over by H.E. Lim Sidenin, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and H.E. Var Thorn, the Governor of Kratie province, alongside other local authorities.
According to relevant officials, the bridge is part of a larger project, with the bridge itself being 98.13 percent complete and the entire project—which includes connecting roads—at 87.13 percent completion.
During this temporary access period, authorities are urging all citizens to adhere to traffic regulations, including speed limits, and to follow the instructions of traffic control officers stationed at the bridge.
The project, which broke ground on Jan. 2, 2023, is officially known as the "Cambodia-China Mekong Kratie Friendship Bridge." It connects Bosleav commune in Chetr Borei district with Prek Prasop commune in Prek Prasop district.
The bridge measures 1,761 metres in length and 13.5 metres in width, accommodating vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. It is supported by 36 piers and includes a navigable section of 100 metres by 15 metres.
Financed by a concessional loan of approximately US$114 million from the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the project is being constructed by the Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) with technical oversight from Wan’an Guangzhou Technical Consultant.
