Cambodian King Urges Nation to Honour Fallen Heroes during Kan Ben & Pchum Ben Festivals
AKP Phnom Penh, September 08, 2025 —
His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, has called on the nation to dedicate the merits of this year's Kan Ben & Pchum Ben Festivals to the national heroes who sacrificed their lives to defend the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
In a Royal Message released this morning, the King underscored that the festival, a deeply meaningful national tradition, provides a profound opportunity for all Cambodians from all walks of life to collectively honour the souls of fallen patriots who fought bravely against aggressors. He prayed that their spirits be guided toward a peaceful realm.
“I sincerely rejoice with the entire Cambodian nation in celebrating this 15-day Kan Ben & Pchum Ben Festivals,” the King stated, noting that the festival reinforces national unity, preserves cultural values, and safeguards Khmer Buddhist traditions.
His Majesty emphasised that Pchum Ben is an occasion for Cambodian families to reunite at ancestral homes and pagodas, perform acts of merit, and express gratitude to their benefactors and departed relatives. He specifically highlighted this year’s festival as a chance to honour the heroic soldiers who gave their lives in defence of the motherland.
The 2025 Pchum Ben Festival is being observed from September 08 to 22. The King’s message outlined its purposes, which include strengthening harmony, celebrating agricultural harvests, supporting Buddhist monks during the Vossa retreat, and dedicating merits to ancestors.
In keeping with Buddhist tradition, the King also encouraged pagodas to distribute any surplus offerings to vulnerable groups, such as displaced families, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and orphans.
The Ministry of Cults and Religion has instructed its departments to work with chief monks and pagoda committees to ensure the proper observance of the festival, including arranging memorial services for fallen soldiers, ancestors, and compatriots who died for the nation.
