Cambodian Top Diplomat and Japanese Envoy Discuss Promotion of Peace along the Border

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation exchanged a discussion with H.E. Suzuki Hideo, Ambassador for Mekong Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, during his visit to Cambodia yesterday.
According to H.E. Chum Sounry, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC), besides bilateral cooperation between the two countries, the ongoing Cambodia-Thailand border tension was also on the agenda.
“The two sides also exchanged views on the Cambodia-Thailand border situation, underscoring the importance of promoting peace and restoring Cambodia-Thailand relations to normalcy through the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire agreements, exercising utmost restraint, promoting engagements at all levels, exploring of possibilities for humanitarian demining, and reopening of border crossings,” the spokesperson said at a press briefing this morning.
During the meeting, both sides expressed their satisfaction with the continued progress in bilateral cooperation between Cambodia and Japan, including political cooperation, trade, investment, security, development cooperation, mine clearance, and the removal of explosive remnants of war, both within bilateral and multilateral frameworks.
H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn expressed, on behalf of the Royal Government and the people of Cambodia, his sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Government of Japan for its continued contribution and support to the causes of peace, development and humanitarian assistance to displaced persons along the border at this time.
On the same day, the Japanese Ambassador for Mekong Cooperation also met with H.E. Gen. Tea Seiha, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, and H.E. Lam Chea, Minister in Charge of State Secretariat for Border Affairs, and listened to explanations on the latest border situation.
