Cambodia Welcomes Diplomatic Corps’ Appeal for Full Ceasefire Implementation
AKP Phnom Penh, August 24, 2025 --
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) has welcomed the appeal of the diplomatic corps in support of upholding the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, expressed during a diplomatic visit to Oddar Meanchey province on Aug. 22, 2025.
According to H.E. Chum Sounry, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the MFAIC, H.E. Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan, told the journalists in Oddar Meanchey province on Aug. 22 that the Japanese government firmly supports an unconditional and prompt ceasefire.
“Japan also wishes to provide support for the affected people. We hope that this issue will be resolved through peaceful dialogue between the two countries, not by fighting,” the Japanese Ambassador was quoted as saying.
For her part, Ms. Bridgette Walker, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. of the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, underlined that the visit was very helpful in allowing the U.S. to observe the situation on the ground. She stressed that President Trump and Secretary Rubio are closely following the developments, have spoken with both the Cambodian and Thai governments, and “encourage and expect both governments to uphold their commitments to the ceasefire.”
Mr. Koen Everaert, First Secretary and Deputy Head of Cooperation of the Delegation of the European Union to Cambodia, also emphasised that the EU encourages both sides to maintain the ceasefire agreement and continue good communication in order to rebuild trust and stability along the border.
Cambodia has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire agreement reached on July 28, 2025, in Putrajaya, as well as the 13-point outcomes of the Extraordinary Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee Meeting on Aug. 7, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur.
In this regard, H.E. Pen Bona, Head of the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit, stressed that peace has become the very identity of Cambodia, and reiterated that the Royal Government’s stance on peace is clear, absolute, and unwavering.
