Cambodia Highlights GI Success at WIPO's Geneva Convention Anniversary

H.E. Ouk Prachea, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Commerce and Head of the Cambodian delegation, attended the 10th Anniversary of the Geneva Convention of the Lisbon Agreement on the Protection of Geographical Indications and the Exhibition of Cambodian Geographical Indications held on July 10, at the WIPO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
In his speech at the event, he recalled the process of Cambodia in joining the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration in 2018 and received international protection through the registration of “Kampot Pepper,” a national product with cultural identity and historical heritage, as well as the development of the Cambodian farming community in Kampot province.
To date, Cambodia has registered a total of six national GI products, including Kampot pepper, Kampong Speu palm sugar, Koh Trung pomelo, Mondulkiri wild honey, Takeo silk, and Preah Vihear fragrant rice.
In addition, GI products registered under the Lisbon system include Kampot pepper and Kampot-Kep salt, which have received international protection through the Geneva Convention of the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration, and have helped strengthen brand leadership, value addition, and consumer confidence.
He said that Cambodia is committed to continuing to actively participate in the Lisbon system and WIPO to promote national products, especially products with GI potential to be registered for protection in the Lisbon system, to the international arena and as part of participating in achieving the implementation of sustainable development policies and the environment.
At the10th anniversary of the Geneva Convention in Switzerland, Cambodia organised an exhibition and inviting guests to visit and try Cambodia's GI products, including: Kampot pepper, Kampot-Kep salt, and several other products.
