Embassy of Japan to Hold Tanabata Festival 2025 in Second Week of July
AKP Phnom Penh, June 30, 2025 --
The Embassy of Japan, in collaboration with the Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Centre (CJCC), the Japan Foundation Asia Centre (JFAC) and many other partners, will celebrate the Tanaba Festival 2025 from July 11-13, 2025 at the CJCC in Phnom Penh.
The Tanabata Festival, also known as the Star Festival, is organised annually in Cambodia since 2004 to promote cultural exchanges between the two countries.
According to the Embassy of Japan, Tanabata is a Japanese traditional festival, celebrated every year on July 7 in Japan to recall a story of a couple lovers ―Weaver princess and Herdsman― in the sky. Based on the Tanabata story, the two lovers are separated by the Amanogawa River (Milky Way) and allowed to meet once a year on July 7. On the day, Japanese people write their wishes on colourful strips of paper and hang them on bamboo trees to make their wishes come true.
