AKP Phnom Penh, June 13, 2025 --
"Kaun Trey" (which means “baby fish” in Khmer) is one of the nearly 5,000 Cambodian rice seeds deposited at the Rice Seed Bank in the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines since 1972.
The update was shared on June 11 by H.E. Khim Finan, Spokesperson at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.
He added that all Cambodian rice varieties have been well preserved at a temperature of -20 degrees Celsius for research and breeding purposes.
Between 1981 and 1990, Cambodia requested 766 Cambodian traditional rice varieties from the institute to restore its major rice seeds lost during the wars, he said.
