Photos of the Week: Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the Former Khmer Rouge’s Notorious Prison
AKP Phnom Penh, May 16, 2025—

The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is the memorial site of the Khmer Rouge regime's S-21 interrogation and detention centre. Under the command of Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, Tuol Sleng, consisting of Tuol Sleng Primary School and Tuol Svay Prey High School, became the regime's most notorious prison from 1975 to 1979. It is estimated that over 10,000 prisoners were detained, interrogated, and tortured at the facility. Once confessions were extracted, many were executed. Of all the prisoners who passed through Tuol Sleng, only 12 are known to have survived.
