Cambodian National Cycling Team Intensifies Technical Training in Preparation for 2025 Asian Youth Games and SEA Games
AKP Phnom Penh, April 24, 2025 --
Cambodia’s national cycling team is ramping up its technical training regime in preparation for two major upcoming sporting events: the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain from Oct. 22–31, 2025, and the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand in December 2025.
According to Mr. Nou Chamroeun, Secretary-General of the Cambodian Cycling Federation, the team is undergoing intensive training under the supervision of the National Sports Training Centre, overseen by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. The cycling discipline is among 17 sports in which Cambodia plans to compete at the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.
At present, the final number of athletes to represent Cambodia in the Asian Youth Games has not yet been determined by the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) or the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS).
Mr. Nou Chamroeun further elaborated that both senior and youth cycling teams are training together at the Morodok Techo National Stadium. The youth team is preparing for the Asian Youth Games, while the senior team is gearing up for the 33rd SEA Games.
As part of the annual training and selection strategy led by the MoEYS and the National Training Centre, the Federation has gathered selected athletes in preparation for these two major regional competitions. It is also part of a broader vision as Cambodia prepares to host the Asian Youth Games in 2029.
With official approval from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, the federation has selected four youth athletes aged 12 and above—three from Kampong Chhnang province and one from Phnom Penh—who are undergoing full-time training, academic instruction, accommodation, and meals at the Morodok Techo National Stadium.
This training programme runs from the third week of April until December 31, 2025.
Additionally, under the ministry’s approval, a 14-member national team—comprising 10 athletes (4 in mountain biking and 6 in road cycling), along with 4 coaches and assistant coaches—has been assembled for the training camp. This phase began in the third week of April and will continue through the end of November 2025.
In support of the team’s technical and competitive progress, the National Sports Training Centre has granted permission for the federation to conduct an extended training camp in Korng Pisey district, Kampong Speu province. The centre is also monitoring the athletes’ progress and providing financial support—offering each athlete and coach an allowance of 2 million Riel roughly (US$500) from the start of the training until the end of November 2025.
In addition to Cambodia’s participation in 17 sports at the 2025 Asian Youth Games, the country is also preparing to take over as host of the next edition of the Games in 2029. During the closing ceremony of the 2025 Games in Bahrain, Cambodia will officially receive the Games flag and showcase a cultural performance, marking the beginning of its role as the next host nation.
