Minister of Information Urges Municipal-Provincial Information Departments to Boost Local News Production
AKP Battambang, January 31, 2025–
In the era of digital technology, news dissemination through social media and electronic devices has gained widespread attention among Cambodians of nearly all age groups.
H.E. Neth Pheaktra, Minister of Information, has instructed officials from provincial and municipal information departments to increase the production of local news. The goal is to highlight the attractiveness of local areas, support livelihoods, and promote economic activities at the grassroots level.
The minister delivered these remarks during a get-together with the leaders, officials and contract staff of the Battambang Provincial Information Department in the provincial city today.
H.E. Neth Pheaktra emphasised that local news production covers simple topics, yet many stories remain untold or have not reached the public extensively. He pointed out that local achievements, points of interest, people’s way of life, and regional cuisine are all engaging subjects that are easy to produce and likely to attract public attention, not just from local residents but also from a broader audience.
The minister also stressed that producing short-form content—both images and text—is an effective strategy for social media in today’s digital landscape. This approach is convenient, fast, and aligns with the way people increasingly integrate social media into their daily lives.
Furthermore, H.E. Neth Pheaktra highlighted that Battambang province boasts a wealth of tourism potential that demands increased promotion. Enhancing media coverage of these attractions will contribute to economic growth in the province, ultimately benefiting local livelihoods.
During the meeting, the minister also noted that expanding local news coverage provides the public with verified information from credible sources, helping counter misinformation and fake news, which are often created for personal gain and can harm social stability.
He urged officials, particularly those working in media coordination and public relations, to monitor their respective provinces’ media landscape regularly. This includes tracking both positive developments and emerging challenges.
He also encouraged them to prepare responsive communication strategies in line with government policies, acting as key figures within their local administrations to combat misinformation. He went on to emphasise that the fight against fake news is a global challenge, and Cambodia is no exception.
