Almost 3,300 Square kilometres of Land Cleared of Mines
AKP Phnom Penh, January 24, 2025 -- From 1992 to 2024, Cambodia has cleared 3,297 square kilometres of land contaminated by all forms of explosive ordnance, benefiting millions of rural residents.
The achievement was highlighted by Senior Minister and the First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) H.E. Ly Thuch on Jan. 23 during the Clearing for Result IV Projet Board Meeting.
The CMAA president thanked development partners for supporting the demining activities as well as victim rescue, mine education, and gender mainstreaming among beneficiaries.
At the meeting, Ms. Alissar Chaker, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Cambodia, applauded the accomplishment and, along with other development partners, vowed to support Cambodia's national target to get rid of all landmines.
An estimated 4 to 6 million landmines and other munitions have been left behind by three decades of war and internal conflicts in Cambodia that ended in 1998.
