Special Vehicle Plate Sales Earn US$18 Million
AKP Phnom Penh, January 22, 2025 --
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport issued a total of 30,371 special and personalised vehicle plates last year, earning some US$18 million, up 12.5 percent from US$16 million in 2024, a ministry’s report showed on Jan. 22.
Started in 2016, the special vehicle plate registration is priced higher than the normal ones, and the owners can keep the plate when selling their vehicles.
The ministry also registered 413,067 vehicles last year, of which motorcycles accounted for the largest share with 353,603 units, followed by light vehicles at 54,692 units and heavy vehicles at 5,841 units.
In 2024, there were a total of 2,253 registered electric vehicles (EVs), an increase of 620 percent over 2023, which registered 313 new EVs, the report pointed out.
The Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) is committed to reducing pollution through the use of fuel-efficient vehicles and the switch to EVs — at least to 40 percent of the total cars and 70 percent of motorcycles by 2050.
The RGC has developed a strategic policy to turn Cambodia into a regional and global production hub for automotive and electronic components, draw in more investment in the field, and boost exports.
