PM: Government Must Ensure Balance between Farmers and Consumers’ Livelihoods
AKP Phnom Penh, June 03, 2025 -- Addressing the challenge of agricultural product pricing, the Royal Government must carefully consider how to improve the livelihoods of both farmers and consumers.
Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet made the remarks during his intervention before the closing of the two-day National Assembly-Senate Congress held this evening at the National Assembly Palace.
“For other political parties, they can just shout. When they meet consumers, they complain that prices are too high. When they meet producers, they promise to raise product prices,” he stated. “But for the government, it is essential to ensure a fair balance between the livelihoods of farmers and consumers. If agricultural prices rise too high, food costs increase, and consumers—especially civil servants—will end up spending more on daily necessities.”
The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to outline the government’s plans to help farmers, including the formation of modern agricultural communities and various initiatives aimed at offering tangible benefits and sustainable solutions.
He further stressed the Royal Government’s commitment to improving the domestic supply chain by maximising the use of locally produced goods, reducing reliance on imports, and continuing efforts to expand international markets for Cambodian products.
“We are proud to say that our agricultural products are now exported to 95 countries around the world,” Samdech Thipadei noted.
“Although agriculture’s share of the national economy has declined to about 16 percent, it remains a core sector—because as long as people need to eat, agriculture will remain essential,” he concluded.
