Cambodia’s Health Ministry Warns of Rising Flu Cases, Urges Preventive Measures
AKP Phnom Penh, October 14, 2026 --
The Ministry of Health has warned of a notable increase in influenza cases in Cambodia, particularly among young children, older people, pregnant women and individuals with weakened immune systems, urging the public to strengthen preventive measures to protect themselves and their communities.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry on Oct. 13, the Department of Communicable Disease Control’s surveillance system has recorded a significant rise in flu cases.
Influenza can spread easily through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, as well as through direct contact with contaminated objects or surfaces.
The Ministry urged the public to wash their hands frequently with soap and clean water or use alcohol-based hand sanitiser, especially before eating and after touching public objects and surfaces.
It also advised people to maintain respiratory hygiene by covering their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue or the crook of the elbow, disposing of used tissues properly in covered bins, and avoiding spitting in public places.
The Ministry recommended wearing masks in crowded or enclosed spaces and when experiencing respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, a runny nose or sneezing, to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others. People were also advised to avoid close contact with those showing flu symptoms.
Anyone feeling unwell should rest at home, drink plenty of clean water, eat properly cooked and nutritious food, and exercise regularly to support recovery. People experiencing fever, coughing or difficulty breathing should avoid gatherings and travel and seek medical attention promptly.
The Ministry further encouraged people in high-risk groups to consider influenza vaccination in accordance with the advice of healthcare professionals.
Anyone experiencing fever, coughing, headaches, a runny nose or difficulty breathing should seek advice from a health centre or hospital in a timely manner, or call the Ministry of Health’s free hotline at 115 for guidance.
The Ministry thanked the public for their cooperation and said it would continue providing updates on public health issues through its official website, www.moh.gov.kh, and the official Facebook page and website of the Department of Communicable Disease Control at www.cdcmoh.gov.kh.
