Council of Ministers Approves Agreement on Energy Purchase from Laos
AKP Phnom Penh, September 11, 2019 –
The Cabinet of Cambodia this morning passed the government's agreement for the purchase of 2,400 megawatt of electricity generated from coal-fired power plant from Laos.
H.E. Phay Siphan, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister and Chairman of Royal Government Spokesperson Unit, said that this approval was made in the meeting took place at the Peace Palace under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.
Under this agreement, the Electricity of Cambodia (EDC) will buy the 600 megawatt from TSBP Sekong Power and Mineral Company Limited and 1,800 megawatt from Xekong Thermal Power Plant Company Limited – both based in Laos.
According to the document, Cambodia expects to have initial access to the purchased energy in 2024 of about 300 megawatts, following by 600 megawatts in 2025, another 600 in 2026, and 900 in 2027.
As planned, the accord will be officially signed by concerned senior government officials of the two neighbours in the presence of Cambodian Prime Minister and his Lao counterpart H.E. Thongloun Sisoulith who will visit Cambodia tomorrow.
