This Year’s Water Festival Celebrations Suspended to Prioritise Humanitarian Response and National Priorities
AKP Phnom Penh, June 30, 2026 -- The Royal Government of Cambodia has issued a circular announcing the suspension of the Water Festival celebrations along the Tonle Sap River in front of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, which had been scheduled for Nov. 23-25, 2026.
The decision reflects the Royal Government’s continued focus on addressing urgent national priorities, particularly assistance for displaced populations, border-related issues, and other pressing public needs.
According to the circular, while the main festivities in Phnom Penh are suspended, Water Festival celebrations in the provinces may still be held as normal, in line with local traditions and the practical capacity of local authorities and communities.
The Royal Government also confirmed that the three-day public holiday for civil servants, employees, and workers will remain unchanged.
The circular further instructs government working groups at the sub-national level, as well as municipal and provincial administrations, to continue prioritising the welfare of displaced citizens. This includes providing food, shelter, medical care, and other essential assistance to displaced communities, as well as support for wounded and fallen soldiers, their families, and veterans.
The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training is tasked with continuing efforts to facilitate job opportunities for Cambodian migrant workers returning from Thailand, and coordinating with sub-national authorities to disseminate employment opportunities at the local level.
Relevant ministries and authorities are also instructed to strengthen efforts to support local economic activity, ensure price stability, maintain production and supply chains, and address structural challenges affecting business, trade, and investment.
In addition, authorities are directed to enhance disaster preparedness, particularly in relation to floods and drought risks, including water conservation measures ahead of the dry season and in anticipation of potential impacts from El Niño conditions, which may lead to an extended dry season in 2027.
All ministries, institutions, sub-national administrations, and relevant forces are also instructed to maintain public order, security, and social stability, and to strictly implement the “Village-Commune-Sangkat Safety Policy.”
Last year, the Water Festival celebrations in Phnom Penh were also postponed.
