U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Commends Progress in Cambodia-U.S. Relations

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State H.E. Christopher Landau praised the continued progress in relations between the United States and Cambodia during a courtesy call and working meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, on Tuesday afternoon in Hanoi, Viet Nam, on the sidelines of the 3rd ASEAN Future Forum.
During the meeting, H.E. Christopher Landau expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of bilateral ties and noted that both countries still have significant opportunities to deepen and expand cooperation. He also welcomed the conclusion of the historic Open Skies Agreement between Cambodia and the United States, describing it as an important milestone for strengthening bilateral connectivity and cooperation.
The U.S. Deputy Secretary further expressed appreciation for the Royal Government of Cambodia’s support in facilitating investment by American companies and enabling them to expand operations in Cambodia, contributing to the country’s socio-economic development. He also highlighted Cambodia’s strong tourism potential, citing its rich and globally recognised cultural heritage.
In response, Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet welcomed the continued advancement of Cambodia-U.S. relations and reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to further enhancing bilateral cooperation. He emphasised the Royal Government’s policies and measures aimed at supporting private sector growth and ensuring a conducive environment for foreign businesses operating in Cambodia.
Samdech Thipadei also briefed the U.S. side on Cambodia’s infrastructure and logistics development agenda, including the expansion of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port and the construction of the Funan Techo Canal, which he described as a multi-purpose water resource management project designed to improve transport efficiency, enhance national competitiveness, create jobs, and support sustainable socio-economic development.
The two sides further exchanged views on combating transnational crime. Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined Cambodia’s firm measures and cooperation with partner countries, including the United States, to tackle online scam operations, stressing that such efforts would continue until criminal networks are eliminated from the country. The U.S. Deputy Secretary commended Cambodia’s strong enforcement measures.
The Cambodian Premier also briefed the U.S. Deputy Secretary on recent developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border and reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border issues peacefully in accordance with international law and existing conventions, treaties, and agreements between the two countries.
