Editorial: 20th Francophonie Summit to Highlight Cambodia’s Maturity and Capability on the International Stage
AKP Phnom Penh, May 11, 2026 --
As a member of the global Francophone community in the Indochina region, which comprises 90 member states and governments, Cambodia is actively preparing to welcome fellow Francophone nations in November this year.
Cambodia will host the 20th Francophonie Summit from Nov. 15 to 16, 2026. While this will mark the country’s first time hosting the Francophonie Summit, it is far from Cambodia’s first experience in organising major international events.
Over the past 25 years, Cambodia has successfully hosted ASEAN Summits on three occasions between 2002 and 2022, as well as the 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in November 2021.
Each of these regional and international gatherings concluded successfully and earned praise from participating countries and partners. Although the ASEM Summit was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cambodia still achieved positive outcomes despite being a small country with limited economic resources.
The ASEAN summits hosted by Cambodia, especially in 2012 and 2022, saw the participation of leaders from major powers, including the President of the United States. Likewise, the ASEM Summit, involving 30 European countries, 21 Asian countries, and the ASEAN Secretariat, also produced significant results.
Among the key outcomes of the ASEM Summit were the Chairman’s Statement, the Phnom Penh Statement on Post-COVID-19 Socio-Economic Recovery, and the Way Forward on ASEM Connectivity.
Cambodia has also successfully organised several other major international events, including the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World in 2024, the 43rd ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in 2022, the 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games in 2023, the Islamic Summit in 2025, etc.
For the upcoming 20th Francophonie Summit, Cambodia is working intensively to welcome leaders and delegates from the 90 members of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), including 53 full members, 5 associate members, and 32 observer states.
Cambodians are also preparing to warmly greet the nearly 396 million French-speaking people around the world with the phrase “Bienvenue au Cambodge” (Welcome to Cambodia).
As the historic event approaches, responsible institutions and working groups are actively carrying out preparations to ensure the summit’s success.
As host country, Cambodia is also drafting summit documents centred on the theme of restoring peace for shared prosperity and lasting stability.
At the same time, logistics, security, and event management teams are coordinating efforts to ensure the summit proceeds smoothly and further enhances Cambodia’s international standing.
Overall, hosting the 20th Francophonie Summit in November 2026 will not only be a major diplomatic and international milestone for Cambodia, but also a testament to the Kingdom’s growing maturity, capability, and credibility on the global stage.
Through its successful experience in hosting major international events, Cambodia has demonstrated its ability to coordinate, welcome guests, and promote effective international cooperation. With its warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage, the Cambodian people are enthusiastically preparing to welcome Francophone leaders and communities from around the world.
This historic event will serve as a valuable opportunity for Cambodia to strengthen friendship, elevate national prestige, and reaffirm its commitment to peace, cooperation, and sustainable prosperity for the international community as a whole.
