ABC and CMA Denounce False Information Targeting Cambodia’s Banking and Financial Sector
AKP Phnom Penh, April 17, 2026 --
The Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC) and the Cambodia Microfinance Association (CMA) have fully dismissed the false and misleading information circulated recently through Facebook accounts, claiming that some banks had their cash frozen by the United States of America.
“Such fabricated content, which caused public confusion, is irresponsible and harmful, and appears intended to create unnecessary public concern and undermine confidence in Cambodia's banking and financial sector,” ABC and CMA said in a joint statement released on April 16.
The two associations also welcomed the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC)'s prompt action in issuing an official clarification on this matter. “This timely response is important in helping contain misinformation, reduce public confusion, and preserve trust in the financial system,” they underlined.
They further voiced support for the NBC and law enforcement in their efforts to track down and take legal action against individuals spreading such content.
ABC and CMA stressed that the deliberate creation or dissemination of false information concerning licensed financial institutions is a serious matter, as it may cause unwarranted alarm among customers, disrupt normal market conditions, and negatively affect confidence in the broader sector.
They therefore urged the public not to rely on rumors or unverified social media content, and to follow only official information issued by the NBC and the concerned licensed institutions.
