AKP Phnom Penh, May 14, 2021 --
The APSARA National Authority has found many ancient construction structures, including wooden pillar footprints and road and drainage systems at Angkor Thom’s Terrace of the elephants in Siem Reap province.
The authority shared the update recently, adding that the discovery was resulted by an excavation as the authority is implementing a project to improve the grass walkway and drainage system.
The excavation, it added, also aims to study archaeological structures as well as the courtyard building stages in the ancient palace and its underground construction structure.
According to Mr. Khieu Chan, an archaeologist leading the excavation, the ancient drainage system was built in the reign of King Jayavarman VII.
It is nearly 1.5 metres high, 0.2 metre wide and 6 metres long with walls of stones and sandstone as cover.
It was constructed to drain the water from the front of the ancient palace into the east canal toward the lake in the southwest and to Sinthu Angkor Thom, he added.
