Cambodian First Lady Lok Chumteav Dr. Bun Rany Hun Sen Meets UN Secretary-General

AKP Phnom Penh, June 9, 2011 —

Cambodian First Lady Lok Chumteav Dr. Bun Rany Hun Sen met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the UN headquarters in New York on July 7, according to TVK reporter.

In the bilateral talk, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he welcomed the presence of Cambodian First Lady Lok Chumteav Dr. Bun Rany Hun Sen to deliver speeches in the World First Lady Meeting for the UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS from June 8-9.

He said it was an important event for the first ladies in the world to fulfill their active role in contributing to eliminating HIV/AIDS infection, discrimination and AIDS-relating deaths by 2015.

The UN secretary-general appreciated her for a function to contribute to heightening the mother and children health issue, mainly not discriminating against people living with HIV/AIDS in Cambodia and elsewhere.

In reply, Lok Chumteav Dr. Bun Rany Hun Sen expressed support to his perspective to attract the world in accelerating the mother and child health issue in the countries of the world, including Cambodia.

The raising of the mother and children health is a priority taken by Cambodia as it is an issue to keep women, babies and children alive, she said.

She also elaborated on the mother and children health, the prevention of the mortality rate and other issues dealing with medical science and health.
The HIV response in Cambodia has been acknowledged as a global success by the international community, receiving the Millennium Development Goal Award for achievements in halting and reversing the spread of HIV.
Prevalence amongst adults aged 15 – 49 years continues to decline from an estimated 2 percent in 1998 to 0.7 percent in 2010. Coverage of access to treatment and care has dramatically improved with 90 percent of people living with HIV now receiving antiretroviral treatment.
She also conveyed the full support given by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen to H.E. Ban Ki-moon as a candidate for holding the post of UN secretary-general of the second mandate in an election to be held in September 2011.
