A Natural Headwater Identified and to be Developed to Serve Multi-Purposes
AKP Phnom Penh, March 20, 2017 –
Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology has identified a key headwater that encompasses the borders of three provinces – Kampong Thom, Stung Treng and Kratie – of Cambodia and can serve multi-purposes, according to local media report.
After a thorough study, the ministry’s taskforce opted for O’Khis water reservoir, which is a potential source connected to the headwater, in Prek Romeas commune, Siem Pang district of Stung Treng to be a priority for development.
The ministry’s spokesperson Mr. Chan Yutha was quoted in the source saying the headwater is a natural one and the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology will develop its selected point to serve a number of purposes.
Once completed, the work will first and foremost enable an irrigation system to supply water for some 13,000 hectares of agricultural land throughout the whole years and be able to host hydro power plant with the capacity between 7 and 10 megawatts.
The developed water source can also store significant amount of water during the rainy season, thus contribute to reducing flooding.
The area, lastly, will become another natural tourist site that can attract both domestic and foreign visitors.
The ministry’s taskforce assigned to study the newly identified headwater was led by Mr. Chan Sinat – General Directorate of Technical Affairs’ Deputy Director General.
