Cremation Ceremony of Late Samdech Sok An Kicks Off
AKP Phnom Penh, March 19, 2017 –
The official cremation ceremony of the late Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, Samdech Vibol Panha Sok An, began this morning.
Samdech Sok An’s body was moved from his residence in Sangkat Boeung Raing, Khan Daun Penh, Phnom Penh to the crematorium site in front of Botum Vattey Pagoda in a procession attended by civil servants, guests and members of his family.
During the procession, the concerned streets and boulevards were temporary closed for order and security reason.
According to the cremation programme AKP received yesterday, Acting Head of State Samdech Vibol Sena Pheakdei Say Chhum will read the eulogy, while National Assembly President Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin will offer fire for the cremation of Samdech Sok An.
Samdech Vibol Panha Sok An, also a Lawmaker for Takeo constituency, passed away on Mar. 15 in Beijing, China at the age of 66 years old after a long battle with illness.
Born on April 16, 1950 in Kirivong district, Takeo province, Samdech Vibol Panha Sok An has played a key role in the peace seeking process in Cambodia and in establishing the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) or the Khmer Rouge Tribunal. He was also recognised for the listing of the 11th-century Preah Vihear Temple as a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site and for the leadership of APSARA National Authority which is tasked to be responsible for research, protection, and conservation as well as the urban and tourist development of the Angkor Archeological Park.
