Ministry of Commerce Hosts an Inter-Ministerial Meeting on Food Standards

AKP Phnom Penh, July 20, 2012 —

A meeting of Inter-ministerial Committee Coordinating Inspection of Quality and Safety of Products and Services and of National Codex Committee was held here on Wednesday under the chairmanship of H.E. Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister and Minister of Commerce.

As a member of the World Trade Organization, Cambodia has to have a national food standard in accordance with that set forth by the International Codex Committee, said the Cambodian commerce minister.

This will boost more export as we have more markets without tariff barriers, but we still face technical barrier, especially on hygiene.

Public concerns about food safety, biotechnology, pesticides, food additives and contaminants are some of the issues discussed at the meeting.

Codex standards are based on the best available science assisted by independent international risk assessment bodies or ad-hoc consultations organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO).
