King Calls on His Compatriots to Plant Trees
AKP Phnom Penh, July 10, 2012 —
His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, yesterday presided over the celebration of the annual Arbor Day held in Khun Ream commune, Banteay Srey district, some 45 kilometers north of Siem Reap provincial town.
Addressing the event, His Majesty the King called on the Cambodian people to plant more trees and prevent forest infractions.
The Cambodian monarch also stressed on the importance of forests, an important natural resource for environmental balance, economic development, and cultural, ecological and natural tourism. It is a safe habitat for all animal species, but deforestation will cause natural disasters, a threat for social safety, biodiversity, natural resources, etc., he added.
His Majesty the King also appealed his compatriots to further strengthen and expand the forest communities and to prevent forest fires.
More than 20,000 saplings were planted on a land area of 22 ha to mark this annual event.
