Chikungunya Spreads in Kampong Cham Province
AKP Phnom Penh, June 22, 2012 –
The Chikungunya, an insect-borne virus that is transmitted to humans by virus-carrying by Aedes mosquitoes, has been affecting local people in Kampong Cham province, some 125 kilometers north of Phnom Penh capital city.
Dr. Hay Ra, Chief of Anti-Dengue Program of Provincial Health Department said since May, some 250 infection cases of Chikungunya have been found in the province.
Three districts – Kroch Chmar, Memut and Thbong Khmum – have been affected by the disease, he said.
Chikungunya was first found in Cambodia in 1961 and since then there was no report of this disease until last year.
